Learn to dive and get your PADI Open Water certification on the Great Barrier Reef with our range of Open Water Course options

There’s nowhere better than the Great Barrier Reef to learn to dive. If you want to complete your PADI Open Water Diver training in just four days, but also include an overnight experience, this dive course is designed for you.

Spend your first two days at our purpose-built, five-star dive training centre in Cairns, then develop your dive skills on a once in a lifetime overnight experience adventure on board our liveaboard vessel OceanQuest. Our world class instructors will make sure you’re thoroughly trained in theory and in the pool before you set out for the reef.

During your overnight trip, we choose amazing sites at the Saxon, Norman and Hastings reefs, so you’ll experience all the colourful treasures at these Cairns Great Barrier Reef dive locations as you gain valuable dive experience.

Spending the night at the Great Barrier Reef and waking to sunrise on the water, knowing you’re about to become a PADI certified diver is a thrill like no other! After you’ve completed all your training dives you’ll also have the chance to take your first ‘fun dive’ before returning to Cairns.

ITINERARY

DAY 1 - Pool & Theory

- 9am: Pick up from your Cairns city accommodation
- Morning: Meet your instructor, complete paperwork and begin your PADI Open Water dive theory. Lunch is not included on pool days, but you can bring a packed lunch (there are kitchen facilities at our dive centre) or there are plenty of places to eat nearby.
- Afternoon: Begin your scuba skills training in the pool
- 5.15pm: Tread water test
- 5.30pm: Drop off at Cairns city accommodation

DAY 2 - Pool & Theory

- 9am: Pick up from Cairns city accommodation.
- Morning: Continue developing your scuba skills in the pool and complete 200m swim test. Don your wetsuit and equipment for more skills training.
- Afternoon: Finish and review scuba theory, finish with a multiple choice exam
- 5.30pm: Drop off at Cairns city accommodation

DAY 3 - Great Barrier Reef (overnight)

- 7.30am-8am: Pick up from Cairns city accommodation, check in at the dive centre and shuttle to Cairns Marlin Marina for your day trip
- 8.30am: Set off for the reef! During your 90-minute cruise to the outer reef, your instructor will give you a full briefing.
- 11.30am: Arrive at the reef
- 12pm: Lunch is served
- 1pm: Time for your first dive
- 3pm: Second dive
- 6pm: Relax, enjoy the views from on deck and sit down to a delicious dinner served by our on board chef.
- 6.30pm: If conditions permit, you may have the chance to enjoy our exclusive Sharks in the Dark experience!
- 8pm: Dessert
- 10pm: Bar closes

DAY 4 - Great Barrier Reef

- 7.30am: Kickstart your day with coffee on deck and a hot breakfast prepared by our chefs – this is going to be a big day!
- 8.30am: Gear up for your final training dive on the reef. With a hand shake underwater, you’re officially a certified SCUBA diver with a worldwide recognised certification.
- 10.30am: Put your new skills to practice with your first fun dive! Enjoy the sensation as you explore the undersea world in freedom.
- 12.30pm: Celebrate with a delicious lunch
- 3.30pm: Enjoy another fun dive on the outer reef
- 6pm: Dinner
- 6.30pm: If you’re feeling brave, it’s time to hop into the water for your first night dive!
- 8pm: Dessert
- 10pm: Bar closes

DAY 5 - Great Barrier Reef

With all the hard work behind you, today is all about fun dives!

After breakfast and two more dive sessions, it’s time for a final buffet lunch, and to pack your gear for the return trip to Cairns.

Arriving back in Cairns Marina around 4.30pm, we will shuttle you to any city accommodation, if necessary going via our dive centre to collect any stored luggage.

Important Information
RECONFIRMATION: Unless otherwise stated, Divers Den REQUIRE all customers to ‘reconfirm’ their booking at least 48hrs prior to departure. Please use the below Divers Den contact information to get in touch before their recommended timeframe of 48hrs prior to departure. Operators ask you to do this to guarantee their passenger numbers, arrange pick up times and locations, and answer any last minute queries. Please contact your travel agent for any non urgent issues outside of this period as stated below.

YOU SHOULD BRING: Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, Swimsuit and towel, Certcard and logbook for certified diving, Overnight bag with changes of clothing, including warm clothing and socks for overnight wear, Toiletries, Reusable water bottle. Bedding and bath towels are supplied on board. Excess baggage can be stored at our Draper Street office at check in.

MEDICAL & ALTITUDE INFO: All introductory scuba participants must meet medical questionnaire requirements and some conditions or medications may prevent you from diving. Please check our website for more information: https://www.diversden.com.au/can-i-dive/. Currently the rules state that for a single no decompression dive, you should not fly/go to altitude for at least 12 hours, or 18 hours after multiple dives. Divers Den recommends waiting a minimum 24 hours whenever possible. These are guidelines only, there is no guarantee that these recommendations will prevent decompression sickness. There are no current guidelines regarding diving after flying. Altitude is defined as 300m/1000ft above sea level. This includes going to the Atherton Tablelands (a popular local scenic attraction), so be careful if booking tours to follow your dive trip. Under normal circumstances, you should be out of the water on your last dive at 12pm (midday).

PREREQUISITES AND FORMS: Minimum age 10 (if diver is under 12, we must be notified at time of booking) When enrolling in an entry-level recreational diving certificate you must complete self-assessed medical declaration forms before starting your training. The forms are similar and both are a Queensland code of practice requirement. You may also be asked to provide a medical certificate if required. You must have the ability to pass a 200m swim and 10 minute treading water test.

AGE REQUIREMENTS: Introductory diving: 12 years or over. Open Water dive courses: 10 years or over, but must be accompanied by guardians and a private instructor if under 12 years. If the diver is under 12 years we must be informed before the course starts. You must be aged 18 or over to travel unaccompanied on our day or overnight trips. Anyone younger than this must be supervised by an adult at all times.

DIETARY REQUIREMENTS: Meals on board OceanQuest are chef-prepared. As long as we are advised at time of booking we can cater to most dietary requests. Please contact us for further queries.

ACCOMMODATION: The Liveaboard vessel has 18 twin cabins and four double cabins. All cabins are air conditioned with en suite bathrooms. The other nights accommodation during the 4 days not included in the package are at your own expense.

TRANSFERS: We offer complimentary accommodation transfers on our dive courses and overnight trips. Please advise at time of booking. Or when reconfirming 48hrs prior to your scheduled departure.
